Why Donate?

All money raised by the Ghizo Tsunami Fund will be going directly into helping the small communities of Ghizo Island to recover from the tsunami. As we are not a large registered charity, none of the donated money will be spent on administration costs, and instead every penny will be of direct use to the people in getting their lives back on track.

  • Villages rely on the jungle to provide their building materials such as palm leaves for walls and roofing and wooden beams for supports, and we hope to spend money on buying them the hammers and nails needed to fix their homes together.

  • As there is no electricity, villagers rely on kerosene lanterns to light their homes, but most of these were lost in the tsunami. We hope to buy lanterns for the villagers not only in the long run, but also to provide light for them in the jungle where they currently live as they wait for their homes to be rebuilt.

  • The church is perhaps the most important asset to most villagers, and many were destroyed. Churches tend to be built from more permanent materials such as bricks or cement sheeting, the purchase of which is costly. We hope to contribute towards this.

  • Gizo town suffered some terrible damage, however most importantly the hospital is now barely usable. As this is the only means of medical treatment not only for Ghizo but for its surrounding islands, it is crucial that the hospital is up and running effectively in the near future. We are hoping to provide money not only for medical supplies, but also to help with repairing the significant structural damage suffered on the day. Along with this a long term project which we hope to initiate will be the formation of a radio network between villages and the hospital, which in the long run will aid speed of response to any larger more serious medical emergencies.

Once again thank you for showing your support towards these people and with every pound raised we will endeavour to make their lives as normal as they once were. Any more information on the Solomon Islands and relevant News regarding the tsunami and aid program can be found on:
